Golden Greed

I have another tale for you.  A story that I turned into another Kindle eBook.  A tale that is now part of what I like to think of as my Transgendered Lives collection.  And guess what.  The main character is transgendered.  Surprise!  Oh.  You’re not surprised?  Sorry.

In case you haven’t figured it out by now, the title of my new book is:  Golden Greed.  And the weird thing here is that this book has a subtitle too:  Shadler’s Curse.  That’s because as I was writing it, this book went through about a dozen different title changes.  But each time it always seemed to come back to Golden Greed…until I got to Shadler’s Curse.  Finally, in the end, I decided to go with the one title that I had always identified with the story, Golden Greed, but I stuck Shadler’s Curse in as a subtitle, just so it wouldn’t feel totally rejected.

So what can I tell you about this book?  Here’s the official blurb I wrote for it:

“Throw it to the wells of hell!”

Gold!  Historic gold.  Priceless gold.  Gold bars the size of bricks.  Gold bars that each have Nazi symbols stamped into them.  Gold bars found somewhere where they shouldn’t exist.  But for Carl who found them, the question soon became, were they cursed, or was it his life that was cursed instead?

Carl was an in-betweener.  He was a transgendered soul who was several months in on his journey going from being Carl to Carly.  Man to woman.  He was at that in-between stage where if you looked at Carl as a man, you’d probably think there was something wrong or not quite right about him.  If you looked at Carly as a woman, if you didn’t notice immediately that she was in transition, you would probably think there was something wrong or not quite right about her as well.  In-between.  As such, Carl was doing the best he could to deal with life.  He was particularly worried about coming out to everyone at work and possibly losing his job over it.  His relationship with his wife that he still loved was pretty much history.  But the most important thing of all to him was his relationship with his eleven-year-old daughter.  A relationship that he cherished above all else.

All those problems though were normal.  All the problems and fears that Carl faced were to be expected.  What wasn’t expected, was the gold that Carl found.  A find that was momentous.  A find that was historical.  A find that greedy people would do anything to get their hands on.

Not only must Carl face all the fears of transitioning from male to female.  He must also face the fears from greedy people bound and determined to do anything for the sake of getting their hands on his gold.  Gold that he didn’t know was cursed.

Yes, as we covered, this book is about another transgendered person and the oddball things that have been thrown into his/her life.  This time I’m dealing with a middle-aged man in transition.  A man with a family.  A man with a soccer playing daughter.  A man who’s doing the worst thing imaginable to that family – changing his gender.  Changing who he is.

I honestly think you’ll enjoy Golden Greed.  In some ways, it’s a very typical Karen Singer book.  In other ways, like every other book I’ve written, it’s very different than anything else I’ve written before – which kind of makes it a typical Karen Singer book as well.
